About Us
Hlakanaphila Analytics is a non-profit research organisation dedicated to excellence in the field of analysis, particularly quantitative analysis. It is an Association incorporated under s21 of the Companies’ Act, under the name Hlakanaphila Analytics. The Association consists of a number of directors working in the field of analysis. Each director brings different skills to the organisation. The Directors (in alphabetical order) are:
Rod Alence
Rod Alence is a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2002, Rod won the American Political Science Association “Best Dissertation on Political Economy” Award for his Stanford University PhD dissertation “World Markets and the Politics of African Open Economies”.
Jabu Dhlamini (Nhlapo)
Jabu Dhlamini (Nhlapo) was formerly a researcher at Technikon South Africa, now part of the University of South Africa. She has also been a media officer for the Independent Complaints Directorate, and prior to that a fieldworker for the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR). Jabu was appointed by the South African government to the “Commission of Inquiry into Farm Attacks“, which completed its work in 2003. Jabu is proficient in most South African languages and is experienced at conducting interviews and focus groups in a number of languages.
Michael ‘O Donovan
Michael ‘O Donovan works full-time as a director of Quanta. He was formerly a research specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), where he specialised in geographical information systems (GIS). He has a Master’s degree in sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before joining the HSRC, Michael established the TownshipDatabank, which aimed at the creation of an up-to-date demographic profile of Gauteng townships and settlements. Michael was the co-recipient of the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) Best Practice Award for best practice in empowering urban communities.
Dharmita Mistry
Dharmita Mistry is a practising attorney. She has a BA. LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Jean Redpath
Jean Redpath works as an independent research consultant, predominantly in the criminal justice field. Jean was formerly a researcher at the Institute for Human Rights and Criminal Justice Studies at Technikon SA, and prior to that a parliamentary analyst for the South African Institute of Race Relations. She has a BSc. in Mathematics and Chemistry, and an LLB, from the University of Cape Town, and has been admitted as an attorney in the Cape High Court.
