Quanta Research Services (Quanta) is a research entity dedicated to excellence in the field of analysis, particularly quantitative analysis. The core researchers leading QRS are Michael O’ Donovan and Jean Redpath.

Michael ‘O Donovan

Michael O'Donovan

Michael ‘O Donovan works is a research consultant with more than twenty years’ experience.  His personal website detailing his extensive work is available here. He was formerly a research specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), where he specialised in geographical information systems (GIS). He has a Master’s degree in sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before joining the HSRC, Michael established the TownshipDatabank, which aimed at the creation of an up-to-date demographic profile of Gauteng townships and settlements. Michael was the co-recipient of the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) Best Practice Award for best practice in empowering urban communities.

Jean Redpath

Jean Redpath

Jean Redpath is a criminal justice research consultant with more than ten years’ experience covering South Africa, and more recently southern Africa and parts of eastern Europe. She specialises inter alia in measuring the impact of policy and law through qualitative and quantitative research methods, which includes survey analysis. She has investigated inter alia the correlates of crime in South Africa; strategies and interventions for murder prevention, crime prevention and youth in conflict with the law; the impact of changes to South African bail and sentencing legislation; the functioning of community courts, municipal courts and provincial safety & security portfolio committees; the relationship between policy and constructions of masculinity; throughput and public confidence in the criminal justice system; and the extent of transformation of the Moldovan criminal justice system. She has degrees in science and law from the University of Cape Town and is professionally qualified as an attorney.

Rod Alence

Rod Alence is a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2002, Rod won the American Political Science Association “Best Dissertation on Political Economy” Award for his Stanford University PhD dissertation “World Markets and the Politics of African Open Economies”.
